Simply put, What Happened Was is one of the most unique, powerful, and well written dramas ever made. Produced first as a play by writer/director/actor Tom Noonan (of Manhunter and Synecdoche, New York), the film is remarkably well crafted from a technical standpoint, featuring gorgeous camerawork and lighting design.
More notable, however, is the script. Incisively funny and melancholy in turns, Noonan takes viewers through the trials and tribulations of a badly matched first date between two co-workers at a law office. What starts as idle chitchat slowly devolves into a dark night of the soul. It's a hauntingly powerful film for such a simple premise and execution.
A favorite of writer Charlie Kaufman, Noonan and Kaufman would go on to work with one another several times over the years following What Happened Was. A great display of Noonan's artistic talent both as a remarkably deft actor and as an all around artist. A masterful work on all fronts.
