Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung may have emerged as the predominant stars of the 70s kung-fu cinema boom, but they were far from the biggest stars of the decade. That title belonged to names like David Chiang, Jimmy Wang Yu, and Gordon Liu.
Liu is best known as the star of the 36th Chamber of Shaolin series, one of a long string of films he made with legendary director and choreographer Lau Kar Leung. The 8-Diagram Pole Fighter is a late entry in that partnership—and a late entry in classic kung-fu cinema, coming in 1984. That said, it's also a well-polished, action-filled film packed with all the high intensity choreography that marked Leung's career.
One of the most fruitful and long-lasting partnerships in martial arts cinema, at the tail end of their prime, delivering one more kung-fu classic.
