It’s not Martin Scorsese’s fault that everyone associates him with mob movies and Catholic guilt. His movies on both topics are absolutely excellent, so maybe the association is simply the price of success. But, throughout his career, Marty has tackled a wide range of other ideas and topics, from historical epics, to romances, and even children’s adventure.
Within all that, however, After Hours truly stands apart as the director’s most lighthearted and least sincere film. With an artist for whom every project seems to be an aching portrayal of inner conflict, sometimes a little step back and a little remove can do wonders.
Without so many heartfelt connections to his subject matter, Scorsese crafts what may be the ultimate example of a ‘hostile world’ comedy. A one-night odyssey through the streets of New York, built off a simple desire for a man to return home to his nice comfortable life after a date gone horribly wrong. But every new encounter, every twist in the road leads him to some unexpected fresh hell. There is no escape... from the fun!
