At times it still feels like this is the only real werewolf movie ever made. Sure there's the Universal Pictures classic, but it doesn't hold up half so well over time as Frankenstein or Dracula. Hammer had their go, great actors and (largely mediocre) directors have taken their stabs at the idea.
End of the day, when it comes to actually having a story that's engaging and a wolfman that's frightening? An American Werewolf in London is the one and only go-to.
Griffin Dunne was absolutely in his element in the 1980s, playing exasperated, put upon protagonists. The creature transformation is iconic, the dream sequences are unforgettable, the tale or horror and tragedy executed to perfection. It shouldn't be history's only truly great werewolf movie, but it is.
