The creature feature used to be a staple of B-movie cinema in the 1950s and 60s. Whether it was ‘nature run amok’, mutants in the sewer, or beings from another planet, the small-town Americans of yesteryear were always getting attacked by some horrifying new machination from beyond space and time.
As expectations of genre cinema began to elevate and change, however, these kinds of stories drifted out of style. Fans expected not just a weird looking bug or a 50’ woman, they wanted whole new worlds to explore from their theatrical experience.
By the 1990s that made Tremors very much a throwback kind of film; a vision of an already vanished small-town Americana, under attack by giant sand worms from the dawn of time. A surprise to everybody then, that this ended up being a whole new kind of cult classic.
Great effects, excellent cast chemistry, and a hangout vibe that plonks the movie somewhere ethereal between horror, comedy, and mystery makes Tremors one of the most universally enjoyable pictures I know. A true treat for the whole family.
