High school comedies were really having their moment in the 1980s. Films like The Breakfast Club, Heathers, Pretty in Pink—Hollywood was full focus on the teen experience. Given that, it's remarkable that Three O'Clock High managed to fall so far off the radar.
Produced by Spielberg, much like Poltergeist, his touches can be seen all over the technical details of the film. Dynamic camera-work, long tracking shots, far more than most similar movies of its era, Three O'Clock High is a wonderfully filmed piece of cinema.
Reportedly, the famed director ended up having his name removed from the project, because he felt it was too dark compared to his vision for the film. It was a notable box office bomb on opening, which is something of a shame given how fast-paced, funny, and generally well made the picture is. Over time Three O'Clock High has stood up as one of the best teen comedies in a decade teeming with similar pictures.
