Long before Kiss Kiss Bang Bang put him in the director’s seat, Shane Black had built his reputation as one of Hollywood’s premiere screenwriting talents. Starting with Lethal Weapon and the Last Boy Scout, Black quickly became known for his witty, action-forward scripts.
Within those early years of his career, The Long Kiss Goodnight stands somewhat apart. It’s still an action-mystery with a precocious child thrown in the mix (all staples of Black’s work), but Geena Davis plays way against type as the cold blooded assassin that amnesia has turned into a stereotypical small-town housewife.
Renny Harlin’s direction is hardly deft, but the violence is plentiful, the explosions are huge and the dialogue is razor sharp. It’s also a great prime role for Samuel L. Jackson, shortly after his star-making turn in Pulp Fiction that launched him from smaller supporting roles into a full-fledged box-office draw.
