Hard Boiled may be Woo's most monumental film, Face/Off may be his wildest and most creative, but The Killer is his signature style piece. This is the point where Woo's tendencies and inclinations really solidified into a complete picture of exactly what his vision really was.
There's a tragic bromance, there are doves and candles, there's slow motion, there's Chow Yun-Fat looking sexy as hell. We even get a couple of speedboats. This isn't just A John Woo movie, this is THE John Woo movie.
It can be a little choppy for pacing and tone, but that last gun battle in the church is pure cinema magic. Ah Jong and Lee Ying are one of cinema's great "in another life we could have been friends" pairings. Movies about dudes being bros don't get much better than this.
