Quality detective fiction provides some of the most enjoyable storytelling in cinema. The path of an investigator, as they wind their way through clues, locations, witnesses, and suspects on their way to solving a crime provides a natural narrative arc and build of tension.
That said, there's something special about getting the look and feel of a detective story just right. With its beautifully rich black & white filming, and swimming in 1950s Italian style, The Facts of Murder is every bit a perfectly formed mystery thriller.
Directed by and starring neorealist auteur Pietro Germi (who took home an Original Screenplay Oscar and Best Director nomination for Divorce Italian Style), and featuring Claudia Cardinale in one of her earliest prominent roles, this is one of the best pre-giallo mystery films to come out of Italy.
