Few notable directors have found such continued success highlighting life at the fringes of American society as Sean Baker. In 2025, Baker's smash hit Anora swept the Academy awards with wins for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing (as well as landing a Best Actress award for Mikey Madison).

That triumph feels like the culmination of years of aggressively innovative filmmaking. Perhaps nowhere more so than Tangerine. 

Shot using little more than an iPhone, relying largely on natural light and found locations, Baker told the story of two transfemme sex workers on the streets of LA and their desperate search to hunt down a cheating pimp. Casting hitherto unknown trans actors Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor, Tangerine is a poignant, often hilarious piece of cinema verite that showcases Baker's stripped-down approach to filmmaking in its purest form.
