Notorious isn't the most obvious example of Alfred Hitchcock's cinematic excellence, not with so many other incredible films to compare it to in the director's body of work. However, it may just be the best example of the director as a narrative craftsman and master of tension.
By all rights, with just a few fairly straightforward sets and locations, a small cast of characters, and little in the way of the notable cinematic flourishes that marked works like Rope, Rear Window, or North By Northwest, Notorious manages to be an entirely engrossing and thrilling picture.
A story of post-WWII espionage, a romance, and a desperate bid to expose a Nazi hiding out in South America. Hitchcock's command of pacing and camera movement make Notorious a must-see piece of the director's filmography.
