Night and the City | Blu-ray

Alongside The Wrestler, Night and the City is the best movie ever made about the world of professional wrestling. A small time grifter and night club tout has bigger dreams of striking out on his own. The key to his success? The formation of his own pro-wrestling promotion.

Unfortunately, while the opportunity is clear and all the pieces are in the right place, Harry Fabian (Richard Widmark) has none of the clout or connections needed to make it happen. What follows is a thrilling ride through the scummy world of the London underworld of the 1940s.

Widmark is firing on all cylinders here, in one of his trademark 'charismatic loser' roles, while real life pro wrestlers Stanislaus Zbyszko and Mike Mazurki (and Olympian Kenneth Richmond) provide fantastic naturalistic performances. An essential film, not just for wrestling fans, but for classic cinema lovers of all kinds.
