Largely known as an outsider art-house and exploitation director (and cinematic partner to Andy Warhol), Paul Morrisey did try his hand at some more typical genre efforts as well. Mixed Blood and Spike of Bensonhurst may not have been major commercial successes, but they are no less fascinating and unique pieces of cinema.
Mixed Blood focuses on the gang wars of New York in the 80s, where a Brazilian woman and her son run a drug dealing operation, trafficking in heroin and cocaine. When a turf war spirals out of control, no one is spared.
Morrisey's intensely naturalistic, street-level shooting style and tendency to work with unknown/untrained actors gives Mixed Blood an almost docu-drama like feel at a time when samey, low-budget Warriors knockoffs were flooding the market. Marilia Pera is magnetic in the lead as gang leader Rita la Punta, everything else about the movie swims in her wake.
