Essentially a remake of the 50s British sci-fi serial (and 1967 Hammer film) Quatermass and the Pit. Lifeforce recasts the invading locust aliens of the past into crystal-dwelling space vampires for a sexier, more modern twist on a classic.
Directed by Tobe Hooper (of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist fame) and written by Alien's Dan O'Bannon, the film has all the pedigree of a sci-fi horror home run.
I won't argue that it delivers on that promise. It's a sprawling, awkwardly paced film, and I'm not all that convinced Steve Railsback was the right man to lead it. But, this is a constantly escalating practical effects showcase, starting with a space-ship full of vampires and ending with London engulfed in flames. At every turn Hooper tried to go bigger and better and I can't help but admire the ambition.
