John Cassavetes was a director so far out ahead of his time that it still often feels like cinema isn't quite picking up what he was putting down. A master of cinéma vérité styled docudrama, the director's works carried and intense feeling of the personal through meticulously rehearsed improvisation.
Husbands, then, is sort of like Cassavetes' take on The Hangover. A group of idiot man-children, lifelong friends, decide to take a debauched, gambling and sex filled trip to London following the recent death of one of their close mutual acquaintances.
Ever present faces in the director's filmography, Peter Falk and Ben Gazzara join Cassavetes for this rambling, drunken several-days long spree. A stark portrait of American masculinity, fraying at the edges when real honest emotion is entered into the mix. At times a lighthearted comedy, at times a brooding drama, Husbands is a deeply necessary film.
