Goin' South | 4K UHD+Blu-ray

For much of its history Goin' South was dismissed as something of a failed experiment. 'Jack Nicholson tried his hand at directing and was not good at it,' is largely the extent of it.

I won't argue that this is, in fact, a well directed film. Much like One-Eyed Jacks, Buck and the Preacher, or even Night of the Hunter there are plenty of signs here of a first time director trying out a lot of ideas that don't all necessarily mesh well together. That said, I do think that Goin' South is a really enjoyable, funny film.

Essentially an actor's showcase featuring Mary Steenburgen, Christopher Lloyd, John Belushi, Veronica Cartwright, and even Danny DeVito (and of course Nicholson himself), the movie tells the tale of a career criminal saved from the gallows by a woman in desperate need of a manual laborer. A fate worse than death? An unlikely love story? Mostly a strange little slice of 70s western comedy.
