The original short story by HP Lovecraft, upon which this movie was based, doesn't even come in at 3,000 words. A footnote in the writer's career. All the more credit then has to go to Stuart Gordon and longtime collaborator Dennis Paoli for turning this minor work into a thoroughly entertaining film.
As with Re-Animator before it, a major portion of the credit has to go to Brian Yuzna for his creature creations, and to Jeffrey Combs. Few actors have been so well suited in their careers to play wormy creeps than Combs. A favorite actor in Gordon's work, he shines her as the research assistant overcome by mysterious forces from an alternate dimension.
It's bloody, trashy, under-acted, and thoroughly disgusting piece of schlock cinema. Or, to put it another way, it's absolutely perfect.
