It feels rarer than ever in the modern cinematic age for producers to release a genre film using A-list acting talent that's not part of some pre-existing cinematic universe. A big budget sci-fi movie that isn't Star Wars or MCU or another video-game spinoff or 80s/90s reboot?

The fact that Edge of Tomorrow also manages to be an entertaining, emotionally gripping cinematic experience almost feels like an afterthought to the simple fact that we so rarely get to see blockbusters like this anymore.

Even if Tom Cruise isn't your favorite actor in the world, it's worth showing up to watch all the hilarious ways he can bite the dust entering trench warfare against a massive invading alien army. Small roles for Brendan Gleeson and Bill Paxton add a lot of life to the film even outside the action set-pieces and make this one of the best modern Hollywood sci-fi pictures out there.
