Blaxploitation cinema represents one of the most complicated legacies of the American film industry. On the one hand, as an exploitation sub-genre many of the films rely heavily on racial stereotypes, misogyny, and cartoonish violence. On the other hand, after decades of effectively ignoring Black voices and Black actors, these projects were the first attempt by the industry to capture the African American audience outside of serious drama.
As a result, it should be noted, that Blaxploitation film was a great source of innovation in the creation of modern action cinema. Quippier, more biting scripts, dynamic stylish heroes. Movies like Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, and 48 Hours owe as much to the foundations that these movies laid as they do major Hollywood productions.
This collection gathers some of the finest films the Blaxploitation movement ever produced. Coffy and Across 110th Street are likely the most familiar to wider audiences. My personal favorite however is Truck Turner. A Shaft knockoff starring Isaac Hayes as a suave, tough as nails bail bondsman, with major highlight performances from both Yaphet Kotto and Nichelle Nichols as diabolically evil pimps. An excellently curated set.
