Beyond the Black Rainbow | Blu-ray

Inter-dimensional horror is one of the more unique substrate of the larger genre. A favorite subject for HP Lovecraft and a regular point of interest for writers like Clive Barker and Stephen King, these stories imagine a world where the veil of our reality is under constant threat of being pierced by beings from an unimaginable plane of existence.

Cinematic realizations of these concepts are unsurprisingly thin on the ground. It is much easier to produce a knife wielding maniac or a or ghostly haunting that it is a separate dimension of space and time along with beings that might inhabit it.

Beyond the Black Rainbow never quite builds its way into being the high-energy thriller that Cosmatos' followup film Mandy becomes by its last act. But this is nevertheless a uniquely entrancing horror vision. A synthwave infused journey into the unknown.
