More bold style and iconic action from John Woo. Hong Kong's most legendary action director, with the first tastes of the style that would define the rest of his career.
Heading into the 80s, Woo was a fairly workaday director, mostly dabbling in traditional kung fu cinema and comedy film. 1979s Last Hurrah for Chivalry shows a lot of ideas for the 'Heroic Bloodshed' films to come, but it wasn't until Heroes Shed No Tears in '84 that Woo made his first modern action film. A Better Tomorrow followed just two years later.
Chow Yun Fat's first partnership with Woo tells the tale of a pair of counterfeiters who find themselves caught between family allegiance and criminal enterprise. The sequel sees Fat recast as the twin brother of his character from the first film, while continuing the original's dramatic arc. Finally, Tsui Hark takes up directing duty for the third film, a prequel that brings Fat back to his original role.
