In Michael Mann's fifteen feature film career spread out over six different decades, The Keep stands alone. A war movie, a horror movie, a fantasy, Mann reached well outside of his neon soaked crime cinema toolbox to craft this strange piece of Hollywood lore.
I wouldn't go so far as to call what came out the other side a failure. The Keep is a visionary film unlike any other. But it's hardly the film Mann had hoped for, and the limits of his ambition are clear throughout.
Editing and storytelling suffer, effects were seriously compromised by the untimely passing of visual effects supervisor Wally Veevers. What survived is still a fascinating vibe. Something very nearly sublime, while at other times hardly feeling like a finished film.
