No actor owned the poliziotteschi genre like Gian Maria Volonte. A commanding force in Italian film, notable for his work with Sergio Leone and Elio Petri among others, Volonte was a remarkably versatile talent in crime, comedy, drama and western film.

It was the crime dramas, however, where he best shone as a leading man. And within that genre, Slap the Monster on Page One is one of his best.

A political thriller, in which Volonte plays the editor of a major Italian tabloid paper, who sees the murder of a young girl as a perfect opportunity to steer an upcoming election into the hands of conservative politicians. Part murder mystery, part psychological thriller, part political drama. This is a film that lives off Volonte's ability to carry a film with his presence.
