Of all Paul Verhoeven's Hollywood films Showgirls is his most divisive. In some ways I'm not surprised, a story all about women in a world built entirely around male desire and expectation is, in a lot of ways, a film without an audience.
Critics at the time panned Elizabeth Berkley's performance in the lead, and controversy followed the film's development over its carrying an NC-17 rating into the box office. However, while initially a disappointment, the film was a smash hit on the rental market and has gained a serious cult following over time.
Mostly it feels like, without the remove of robotic cops, dream worlds, or interplanetary war, Verhoeven's skewering of a shallow, materialistic, and sensation-driven American society hit a little too close to home. Showgirls undresses Las Vegas as the capital of an American dream built on vanity and self interest. At times an intensely difficult film to watch, but a core piece of the director's oeuvre.
