One of the great benefits of slashers being a repetitive, trope-filled subsection of the horror genre is that they can create some excellent parody. Whether it's splatstick gore-fests like Evil Dead 2, Braindead, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, or more elevated projects like Scream and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, or even just dumb fun like the Scary Movie franchise there's a lot to work with when deconstructing the slasher film.
Released in 1987, Gorman Berchard's Psychos in Love never had found its way to the mainstream success of those films listed above. It's a decidedly micro-budget indie picture, operating without notable actors or extreme special effects. Instead, this quirky little horror movie blends rom-com tropes with slasher tropes to create something unique and charming all throughout. Something more akin to Tucker & Dale vs. Evil than anything else.
There are lots of recurring gags, leering camera shots, groan-worthy dad jokes, and a completely unpolished sense of outsider art. A sweet, disgusting, hilarious little indie rom-com all about two serial killers who fall in love. Isn't that nice!
