Considering that silent film was the first iteration of the medium of cinema, it's notable how rare attempts to recapture some of the interest and magic of silent movies have been. Pictures like Mel Brooks' Silent Movie or The Artist are among a few scattered attempts at reimagining movies as the world first knew them.
That then makes Hundreds of Beavers a real treat. Working in reference to classic "rubber hose" animation styes and silent cinema slapstick comedies, director Mike Cheslik put together a truly timeless feeling piece of entertainment. No opportunity for a joke is passed up, every chance to go bigger and bolder is taken.
In a world overflowing with sensory-invading entertainment, where movies and TV shows often feel like they want to be as loud and aggressive as possible, it's remarkable that Hundreds of Beavers can produce so many quality laughs. Here's hoping he and writer Ryland Brickson Cole Tews can continue finding similar success in the future.
